What is Next Top Startup?
Next Top Startup is an international competition for new growth companies in the “valley of death” offering a prize of up to 25.000€. Ten finalists have been invited to come to Barcelona, Spain and compete to win the prize over the course of two days, 16th and 17th of June.
During the competition days entrepreneurs will work closely with a sizeable team of experts who will both mentor them and decide which one will be crowned the Next Top Start-up and walk away with the no-strings attached cash prize.
Aside from the top ten final contestants, every applying company will receive personalized feedback on their application after the event has taken place.
Applications to Next Top Startup closed at midnight on 26 May 2010, and are treated completely confidential to the degree that only members of the f3fundit selection committee have access to privileged company data.
Why are we doing this?
When we designed this competition, we looked at it from the position of a new company that has a big future but right now is short on cash and resources. How can we make a competition work for them? How can we ensure that all applicants will benefit from it? And how can we create an interactive event where participants not only learn form mentors but also from one another.
Who should come to the Next Top Startup pitches?
The competition is aimed at companies in the so-called “valley of death” who are seeking financing of up to 300k. In reality this financing need will be greater in the case of some of our finalists. The entrants all have innovative, scalable, internationally focused business models concentrated on attractive market segments. They come from sectors as diverse as FMCG hygiene products to mobile applications, web services, virtual networks, cloud computing and even space tourism!
All of them share the ambition to work with expert advisors, angels, private investors, and venture capital investors. They have taken the time to apply, dedicate time to this exercise as a team, as well as paying for the privilege, some are even travelling from as far as South Africa, Brasil and the USA to be here.
If you share an interest in open innovation, global entrepreneurship as well as backing early stage ventures that have exciting new products, then you should register, reserve your ticket and come to see them pitch.
The selection process.
All appicants have passed through a multi-metric evaluation process. This was then reviewed by the event selection committee who made the final decision on the top ten. The chosen then gather in Barcelona on the 16th and 17th of June where they spend two days behind closed doors having their business models intensely examined by a host of experienced mentors along with select investors. Every aspect of their performance over the two days will be taken into consideration when determining who will be the next top start-up.
How to take part.
The event will take place in the ESADE Business School on the 16th, La Casa Llotja de Mar on the morning of the 17th. We then invite you to participate by attending the pitches and networking cocktails hosted by biz Barcelona at Pavelló Mies Van der Rohe, Fira Barcelona from 17.00 on June 17th.
