What is Next Top Startup?
Next Top Startup is an event and contest for start-ups around the world to compete for a winner take all prize of up to €25.000 plus possible added services. The deadline for submissions closed on 26 May 2010.
Unlike similar events of this sort, each applying company will receive a two-page feedback on their strengths and weaknesses as well as relevant materials to help remedy those weaknesses prior to going to market.
Application to the event is done through the f3fundit portal, and is tied to each company profile – all applying companies must fill out the Company Overview and Company & Finances fields in their profiles as well as submit an executive summary in order to be considered for inclusion in the event.
Where and when will the event be held?
As event partner to biz Barcelona it will be held in Barcelona over 16th and 17th of June 2010 to coincide with HIT Barcelona and Dia del’Emprendedor (Day of the Entrepreneur), the final act of the 2nd day will take place from 17.00 in the stunning Pavelló Mies Van der Rohe*, Fira Barcelona, in front of a select audience of respected national and international investors and service providers. Why does it cost to come to the pitches?
Our finalists and all the people connected to the organisation and running of this event have gone to a lot of trouble to make the final presentations interesting and worth seeing. We recognise that there will be other great activities going on that are focused on entrepreneurship within Biz Barcelona. However, we have selected a great venue, with limited capacity and some fantastic projects that are not to be missed. In addition, you will have time to enjoy the surroundings, network, and relax with a drink once the pitches are complete. Also, we are offering all our attendees FREE one year membership to our f3fundit community once we launch the post Beta version (estimated face value of €250).
How much does it cost?
You have two options:
- See the finalists pitch from 17.00 on June 17th at Pavelló Mies Van der Rohe and then enjoy the opportunity to network and take cocktails in these wonderful surroundings. Now €50 on the door. Note that places are limited so we strongly advise you reserve in advance. Also, this includes your FREE one year membership once we launch the post Beta community.
- Simply come along at 19.00 to network and drink a cocktail. The price is €10 on the door. You can reserve this by registering on the website, this will mean you receive 3 months FREE membership to our post Beta community.
How will the event be organized? What makes it different from say, other startup events?
The fundamental differentiating factor of Next Top Startup is that it’s not industry focused, we believe that the methodology behind starting every new company is very synonymous, and as such have brought down barriers in terms of industry wide participation.
The event itself is structured over a two-day period, day one focuses strongly on business model design, early stage financial management and forecasting, and wraps up with launch strategy.
Day two, focuses on scenario building, innovation and communication, and wraps up with presentations in front of local and international BA’s and VC’s.
However, unlike a typical speaker series, everything in Next Top Startup is interactive and centrally focused on the startup and seeing them succeed.
After the end of the second day, there is an awards ceremony.
What type of companies apply?
Companies currently in the valley of death – internationally oriented, new, innovative, with highly scalable business models from across industries seeking funding of up to €300.000 (£265,000, $400,000) should apply.
We have had applications across 4 continents, representing 11 countries and focused on a variety of segments such as cloud computing, environment, events, finance, health, mobile applications, professional services, recruitment, social enterprise, space tourism, sports and transport. A diversity that we believe to be worth celebrating and encouraging!
