How to Host OpenClaw 24/7: Mac Mini vs VPS vs Cloud
If you want to run AI agent 24/7, the first decision you’ll face is where to host OpenClaw. Your agent needs to be always-on — responding to WhatsApp messages at 3 AM, running cron jobs, monitoring inboxes. That means your hosting choice directly impacts reliability, cost, and how much you’ll hate yourself six months from now. This OpenClaw hosting guide breaks down the three most practical options: a Mac Mini for automation, a VPS like DigitalOcean, and cloud platforms like Railway or Render.
OpenClaw is lightweight. The official FAQ lists minimum requirements at 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM, with 2 GB recommended for multi-channel setups with browser automation. That’s good news — it means all three options are viable. The question is which one matches your budget, risk tolerance, and technical comfort level.

If you’re a solo founder running OpenClaw to automate your business, you already know the upside: one persistent AI agent across WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, and more, handling tasks while you sleep. But here’s the part nobody wants to talk about — OpenClaw security isn’t optional. It’s the foundation everything else sits on. Get it wrong and your agent becomes someone else’s agent.
Recent reports from VentureBeat and CrowdStrike have put a spotlight on how autonomous agents like OpenClaw can become attack vectors when misconfigured. Cisco’s AI research team called OpenClaw “groundbreaking” from a capability perspective but “an absolute nightmare” from a security perspective. That’s not fear-mongering — it’s a wake-up call.

OpenClaw links an AI assistant to messaging channels and tools on a machine you control. Start with a private chat and a task you can reverse. The setup checklist covers installation, channel access and security. The ten workflows that follow are untested examples, with no measured time savings attached.
Set up OpenClaw before automating work
- Read the official install options and prerequisites. At this editorial check, the Node requirement is 24.16+ or 26.1+ (Node 26 recommended), with macOS, Linux and Windows paths. Review an installer’s source before running it; this article provides no remote-script-to-shell command.
- Complete guided onboarding using an AI-provider login or API key. The guide distinguishes a foreground Gateway from an installed background service. Check Gateway status and send a message in the local dashboard before connecting an external channel.
- For phone access, follow Telegram setup: create a bot through the real @BotFather account, add its token, check channel status, send a DM and approve your own pairing request. Keep the token private; restrict group chats and senders. WhatsApp is optional: its current channel is a separately installed plugin with a QR-linked session and its own access policy.
- Read the security guidance and run
openclaw security audit on your installation before connecting sensitive tools. Keep the Gateway local unless authentication, network exposure and firewall rules have been reviewed. Limit senders and tool permissions; treat external content as untrusted. For mutually untrusted users, use separate gateways and credentials, ideally under separate OS users or on separate hosts; one gateway is not a hostile multi-tenant security boundary. Start with read-only or draft-only workflows and human approval before sending, changing records or publishing.
